THE POWER OF LOVE

November 2018 New Moon summons energies fit for the recent celebration of Halloween. The Nov. 7 Moon is in Scorpio, which has a bent for intense, subterranean and sometimes scary secrets and urges.

This year’s model comes with a decided sweetness – and oomph.

“A beautiful, inspiring and empowering New Moon in Scorpio.”

Andrew Ifandis, Cosmos of Astrology

“The Scorpio New Moon immerses us in emotions and experiences that have been washing over us of late, then issues a call to action”

– My forecast

“This New Moon in Scorpio is time to claim back our power, to call back our soul into our body and give birth to our new life.”Nicole O’Byrne, Inner Doorways

Scorpio New Moon

A New Moon occurs when the Moon meets the Sun, as she does every month. The meeting takes on the traits of the sign and launches the next phase of its expression in our lives.

Andrew Ifandis, Cosmos of Astrology, describes the influence of Scorpio on both luminaries:

“When the Sun is in Scorpio our will is strengthened, desires are deep and everything takes on an existential quality. All issues are approached with a “matter of life and death” attitude. They are important because we ourselves feel important and we can display intensity of will.

“The Moon in Scorpio is intense emotions, buried emotions, taboo emotions. It is supercharged psychological intensity, urges of the psyche powerful enough to transform.

“The lunar emotional depth when combined with the solar strong will, make every New Moon in Scorpio a potential powerhouse of renewed emotional stamina.”

Nicole O’Byrne, Inner Doorways, cuts to the chase:

“Scorpio brings us the gift of inner sight, how things truly appear and gives us the courage to face our deepest fears.”

Make It So

The Moon’s traditional ruler, Mars, encourages us to get moving. He’s the planet that rules our motivation, drive and push. He’s in a die square to the New Moon, which demands what he’s best at: action.

“The contact demands transformation – in the collective and our vision for the future, and in our friendships (deepen or die).”

– my forecast

He’s also making an offer, through a cooperative sextile with the other action planet, Uranus, agent of radical, volatile change.

“This [offer] might be more automatic to accept, because it is part of an ongoing process. The two planets of force have squared off multiple times since mid-May, as Uranus moved from 29 Aries to 0 Taurus. Mars activated those gear shifts in August and September. Now Uranus is triggering them as well, having slipped back into Aries the day before the New Moon, for a four-month-plus final wrap-up of his 7-year sojourn in Aries.

“The sextile changes the teamwork of these two planets from hands shoving you in the back to an outstretched hand beckoning, ‘Be my guest.’ This offer requires or leads to a novel or unconventional approach, perhaps a change in how you’re pursuing something.”

In Sync

Mars also shares a harmonious trine with his archetypal counterpart Venus, goddess of love, beauty and desire. She’s within a week of ending her retrograde.

Her retrograde permeates the New Moon’s potentials. Nicole O’Byrne, Inner Doorways, elaborates:

“All our experiences are a part of who we are and all that pain, joy, opinions, defeat, rejection and unconditional love, matter. They have taught us who we truly are against all obstacles and how we become strong.”

The cosmic lovers’ trine lightens the Scorpio energies. My forecast explains:

“We want connection, and we’re going after it with an airy touch (and effective verbalizing) that facilitates making it.

“Their link puts pretty wrapping paper and a bow on the desires and impulses flowing from the New Moon. We’re not working at cross purposes with ourselves, and the same is true of our dealings with close, dear connections.”

Jamie Partridge, Astrology King, also sees softening of the sign’s impulses.

“Venus trine Mars increases your desire for social contact and enjoyment. It balances your soft loving nature with your raw sexual desire so you can be direct without coming on too strong. You will genuinely be interested in friendship not just for sex but for companionship as well. This is a very good omen for your love life. If dating it increases the odds of meeting your perfect partner.”

Love, Reign O’er Me

Another softening factor in this lunation — the Moon is tightly trine Neptune, ruler of transcendence.

The link supports personal growth, says Nicole O’Byrne, Inner Doorways:

“We will have Neptune supporting us, to guide us towards our inner faith and true north. It is when we surrender into the deepest gratitude of all experiences do we find our deepest connection to life.”

Andrew Ifandis, Cosmos of Astrology, sees luminous potentials for ourselves and our relationships.

“This aspect makes us creative, fills us with inspiration and make us easily sense the ambient vibes. It can work marvels in our relationships. Now we are in touch with our most spiritual and we care for what is cherished in our hearts. We see the other’s point of view, we walk in their shoes and we can comfort or show that we really understand.”

The trine is locking in energies that beamed down earlier this year. My forecast explains:

“Scorpio innately navigates powerful, intense energies that are prone to lurking below the surface. Venus’ retrograde through the sign has been luring some of them to light, as once-important connections and situations have popped up from our histories and our psyches for reevaluation.

“Now this Moon softens the energies (and some of those retrograde visitations) with grace, transcendence and a sense of higher purpose or hand.

“The effect is X-Ray goggles with rose-colored lenses, perceiving darkness through understanding, compassion and forgiveness, viewing matters that scare or discomfit us in the best possible light.

“The mixture helps us embrace, assimilate and move forward on impulses that coursed through life for the first nine months of the year. Those qualities come from the easy flow of a trine from the New Moon to Neptune, lord of transcendence and higher love. From January through August, amplifying Jupiter in Scorpio traveled in the same relationship with Neptune and created a bridge between the deepest and highest parts of our beings. The contact exposed us to cleaning out our psyches and basements. It beamed faith and higher inspiration into our very cells. It encouraged making enormous, outlandish wishes, asking for outright magic, and instinctive, primal urges with wisdom greater than mortal.”

Jamie Partridge, Astrology King, says the aspect “makes you more sensitive and compassionate.” He continues:

“An urge to help others means this a New Moon of forgiveness and charity. You will gain a deeper and wider understanding of your place in the world. Importantly, you may realize that achieving your goals and dreams is of prime importance before you can help others.

The New Moon will help you set goals to manifest your hopes and dreams for the future. Strong faith and morals means you need not sacrifice your owns needs or level of comfort….

“Relationships will benefit … because of more spiritual closeness and bonding. Sexual relationships should be more tender and loving. If single you could meet a sensitive or more spiritual type of partner, and this may come from involvement in groups or clubs. Relationships will benefit from a shared vision of future happiness together.”

The Moon-Neptune trine does have downsides, though.

Marina Marcario, Darkstar Astrology, cautions:

“Moon trine Neptune can become extremely devoted to their lover, but they need to be careful their longing to merge doesn’t leave them with no sense of self whatsoever. At this New Moon we do best when they put this great devotion into an all-consuming passion, i.e., An artistic project, spiritual practice or best of all, working to transform the lives of the sick and needy. Moon trine Neptune takes the fantasy element of Neptune and tries to build a utopia. There is a budding savior quality about it and is in tune with the common people’s hope and dreams. The nurturing side of the Moon can take on a transpersonal role in mothering the world.”

My forecast also has warnings and advice:

“An open channel between hidden and powerful energies and the cosmic fog machine could have us – or some of us, anyway – buying in to deception or illusion that resonates with and fuels our worst fears. Your guide stars are the gifts of the Jupiter/Neptune trine from January to August, and the realizations, releases and re-affimations of your Venus retrograde journey.”

Razor’s Edge

Focused and intensified perceptions and personal power are also on tap, courtesy of a sextile between the Moon and the regenerative force of Pluto, lord of the underworld.

“Doors are open for major closet and basement cleaning (yes, there’s apparently an endless amount to do in there). And, more importantly, for owning personal power and adapting structures, foundations and institutions, both personal and collective, to match it.”

my forecast

Jamie Partridge, Astrology King, adds:

“The New Moon sextile Pluto will make you more determined and purposeful to reach your New Moon goals. Although this is not a strong aspect because of the wide orb, it should deepen the compassionate and spiritual influence of Neptune [discussed below].

“The combined influence of helpful Neptune and Pluto aspects makes this a good New Moon for solving mysteries and exposing lies and secrets. It will help you share something you feel guilty or ashamed about. Your loved ones will hopefully be more understanding and forgiving during this Moon phase.”

Playing the Numbers

Multiple planets are changing signs. Andrew Ifandis, Cosmos of Astrology, examines the numbers and sees them mixing endings into the starts of this New Moon:

“Jupiter, Uranus and the Nodal Axis are all situated at 29th degree. This degree in astrology is one of the critical degrees and is usually connected with endings….

“Jupiter is about to move from Scorpio into Sagittarius. It is now time to move on from the truth of the soul to the truth of the world, expanding outwardly and not inwardly, but before doing so we have to face for one last time our deepest emotions, out very truth.

“At the same time Uranus, as it moves retrograde is on the 29th and last degree of Aries. Issues relating to how we can embrace freedom and individuality without being self-centered and disruptive to our relations are again of concern….

“The Lunar Nodes … have just entered into the Capricorn-Cancer axis, something that denotes a shifting of energy that will bring the emphasis on a totally new area of life (chapter) for our personal horoscope for the next 1.5 years.”

Other considerations

The heavens are vast, and so are the techniques astrologers have used to explore them. Let’s look at how some of these add meaning, nuance and depth to the New Moon in Scorpio.

Fixed Stars

The New Moon falls on the fixed star Zuben Elgenubi. Marina Marcario, Darkstar Astrology, explores its meaning:

“Zuben Elgenubi is the main star of the unlucky southern scale of Libra and according to Robson ‘causes malevolence, obstruction, an unforgiving character, violence, disease, lying, crime, disgrace, and danger of poison.’ The two scales of Libra used to be the claws of Scorpio, which was a much larger constellation. So they actually fit very well here in tropical Scorpio. Zuben means ‘claw’ and is the prefix for all the stars that fall in the scales. Libra is actually a very small constellation and six of the nine stars here fall in Scorpio decan 2.

“So we could say that Scorpio decan 2 might be the true Sidereal Librans. The actual constellation of the scales though has a very different vibe than the Venus-ruled tropical sign of Libra. You can see that Zuben Elgenubi is most definitely Scorpionic as Dr. Eric Morse writes: ‘It is well to remember here the association of this star with a scorpion’s claw, used for making love as well as for slaying its prey. It does not let go until one or other matter is complete and onlookers are not sure which of the two acts are in process. Sometimes even the Scorpion seems to get it wrong along the way!’”

Jamie Partridge, Astrology King, adds:

“Symbolically called the ‘Insufficient Price,’ Zuben Elgenubi Chamali represents a karmic debt to be repaid. With a New Moon it can bring wrongful accusation, disappointment, anxiety, disgrace, ruin and illness to self and family. There may also be trouble through the opposite sex, disfavor of superiors, and loss in business and through fire or speculation. [quoting Vivian Robson]

“This star has much to do with justice. Well aspected it gives courage to fight for right and generosity to defeated opponents. Eric Morse says ‘its appearance in better aspect is often just the right moment to repair a relationship and to reconsider an earlier harsh judgment.’”

Asteroids & Minor Planets

Andrew Ifandis, Cosmos of Astrology, notes that wounded healer Chiron is at 28° 20’ of Pisces.

“From there it makes a trine aspect to Jupiter and a sextile and trine aspect to the Lunar Nodes, infusing the lunation with healing energy.”

shutterstock 622832603

Minor Aspects

Jupiter and Uranus are quincunx (or inconjunct), an aspect that some associate with adjustments. Jamie Partridge, Astrology King, explains:

“Jupiter quincunx Uranus creates a state of flux where you can swing between optimism and uncertainty, confidence and anxiety. A growth spurt is possible now in the physical, material and spiritual worlds. Patience, moderation and research will help you choose the best of the opportunities coming your way. So making changes to your values and morals will improve yourself belief and hope for the future.”

Decans

Each astrological sign can be divided into three sections, known as decans (10-degree divisions of the Zodiac). This Moon is in Scorpio decan 2, which is ruled by the Sun and Jupiter.

Marina Marcario, Darkstar Astrology, says of this decan:

“There is a childlike curiosity to the Moon in Scorpio 2, it is also extremely tender and affectionate. The Moon is in its fall here, however. The energies evoked at this time are lustful and desirous, with much focus on seduction. The Moon here needs sexual relationships and adores the courtship process. Add in the inky depth of Neptune and we find great mastery of manipulation. Those touched by New Moon might be lucky enough to find they can pull in anyone they want into their labyrinth of love. It’s easy for this Moon Scorpio 2 to put you under a spell, well maybe they have. This is the Moon of sirens, the song that hypnotizes sailors.

“…. The fixed stars found in this decan indicate scandalous love relationships because it wells up such intense romantic needs that we will do anything to get them fulfilled.”

Sabian Symbols

Over the years, astrologers have devised systems to assign meaning to each degree of the Zodiac. The most popular of the past century has been the Sabian Symbols, proposed by Marc Edmund Jones.

The Sabian Symbol for the 16th degree of Scorpio is: “A Girl’s Face Breaking Into a Smile.”

In his commentary on the Symbol, astrologer Dane Rudhyar explained, “Faith in life and in other human beings enables us to go forth toward relationships with whatever attracts our senses or stirs our imagination. Smiling is perhaps a uniquely human characteristic because it implies a conscious acceptance of relationship, thus a choice.”

Lunar Mansion

In addition to the more familiar 12-sign solar Zodiac, there’s also an older 28-sign (sometimes 27) lunar Zodiac. To the Medieval Arab astrologers, the lunar Zodiac was called the lunar mansions.

The Moon falls in Lunar Mansion 18, which the Arab astrologers called Al Kalb (The Heart). Donna Woodwell of Donna Philosophica nicknamed it “The Caduceus.”

The mansion’s purpose is to heal or prevent illness.

When the Moon is in this mansion, Donna advises: “Start a healthy diet or exercise routine. Schedule medical appointments and procedures. But don’t ignore your health needs or indulge to excess.”

Summing It Up

The Scorpio New Moon invites us to go deep and go high. Andrew Ifandis, Cosmos of Astrology, sums up the potentials:

“This New Moon in Scorpio inspires and moves us within higher frequencies of spiritual rebirth. It is either a renewal of the value that we receive from others or a renewal of our own self.”

Jamie Partridge, Astrology King, ends with the repair possibilities:

“This New Moon is good for setting goals to make your dreams come true. But first, you may have to make amends for previous wrongs and say you’re sorry. This is also a good New Moon for resolving relationships problems through compassion and forgiveness.”
